COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Residents in southwest Iowa should prepare for dangerous storms overnight as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 4 a.m. Sunday. The National Weather Service warns that damaging winds up to 70 mph and large hail could impact communities in Fremont, Mills, Montgomery, Page, and Pottawattamie counties.
According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, the watch was issued at 8:45 p.m. Saturday as a fast-moving line of storms pushed east from Nebraska. The storms could cause scattered power outages, downed trees, and hazardous travel conditions, particularly along Interstate 29 and Highway 34.
Local emergency management officials urge residents to stay indoors, secure outdoor items, and keep devices charged in case of power loss. Lightning will pose an additional threat, especially for anyone outside during the late evening hours.
Storm activity is expected to taper off toward sunrise, but additional weather alerts are possible if the system maintains strength into the morning.
