Des Moines, IA – Over 1.2 million residents across Iowa and Missouri are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m. Thursday night. The watch, issued by the National Weather Service, affects a large portion of the Midwest, including major cities like Des Moines, St. Joseph, and Hannibal.

According to the US National Weather Service in Omaha, the watch area is at risk for scattered gusts of up to 75 mph, large hail possibly reaching two inches in diameter, and the potential for a few tornadoes. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, as these conditions could lead to dangerous situations, especially during the evening commute.

The impacted region spans across several counties, highlighting the seriousness of the weather threat. With the potential exposure including over 1.2 million people, 650 schools, and 56 hospitals, local authorities are urging residents to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and have a plan in place for sheltering in case tornado warnings are issued.
