Chicago, IL – A powerful winter storm could bring crippling ice accumulations from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic through Thursday, threatening widespread power outages and hazardous travel. The most severe impacts are expected in western Maryland, the West Virginia Panhandle, and parts of Pennsylvania, where more than a quarter-inch of ice could bring down trees and power lines, leaving thousands without electricity.
According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, Ice Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories stretch from Kansas City and Chicago to Washington, D.C., and New York. The heaviest ice will fall in the Mid-Atlantic, with a 40-70% chance of more than 0.25 inches of ice in the hardest-hit areas. Highways most at risk include Interstates 81, 80, 76, 70, 79, and 68, where ice will make travel extremely dangerous.
While the worst conditions are expected in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia, the Midwest will also see dangerous travel. Freezing rain and sleet will create slick roads across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan, making morning and evening commutes hazardous.
