Washington, D.C. – Earth’s magnetic north pole has been shifting for centuries, but its rapid movement toward Siberia has scientists concerned. The planet’s magnetic field has weakened nearly 10% over the last 200 years, potentially affecting navigation and communication systems.

According to the British Geological Survey, the pole’s movement accelerated to 31 miles per year in the 2000s before slowing to 22 miles per year. Researchers update the World Magnetic Model (WMM) every five years to ensure accurate GPS and aviation systems.

Scientists are unsure why the pole’s speed changed. Some believe weakening magnetic fields near Canada and Siberia are responsible. While a complete pole reversal is unlikely soon, past reversals have disrupted power grids and satellite communications.

For now, researchers continue monitoring the pole’s movement. They stress that accurate mapping is critical for industries reliant on magnetism.
