Bozeman, MT – A backcountry avalanche warning has been issued for the Centennial Mountains near Island Park and the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone, with dangerous conditions expected through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, heavy snowfall and strong winds are increasing avalanche risk, making steep slopes highly unstable. Forecasters warn that overloaded snowpacks could trigger avalanches traveling long distances downhill.

Officials urge backcountry travelers to avoid avalanche terrain and runout zones—flat areas beneath steep slopes where avalanches naturally flow. Skiers, snowmobilers, and hikers should exercise extreme caution and check current conditions at mtavalanche.com or avalanche.org.

This warning covers parts of Fremont County, Idaho, and Gallatin National Forest in Montana. Authorities note that similar conditions may exist in areas outside the advisory zone.

Outdoor enthusiasts are advised to stay updated, carry proper safety gear, and consider delaying trips into avalanche-prone regions until conditions improve.
