Boston, MA – On this day in 1869, the “September Gale” made landfall in western Rhode Island as a Category 3 hurricane. It remains one of only three Category 3 hurricanes to hit the region, alongside the 1938 Hurricane and Hurricane Carol in 1954.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm caused an 8-foot storm surge in Providence, felled trees, and severely damaged areas west of Boston. All telegraph lines between New York and Boston were cut, paralyzing communications. Additionally, a schooner capsized, killing all but one of its crew of twelve.
As we reflect on the storm’s anniversary, current forecasts predict calm weather for the Boston area through Monday. Sunday will remain mostly sunny with highs near 80°F. Looking into the week, expect a slight chance of rain on Tuesday, followed by clear skies again through Thursday. Despite today’s tranquil outlook, the memory of severe storms like the September Gale reminds us to stay prepared for sudden changes.
