Indiana Dunes, IN — Eight waterspouts and funnel cloud combos were confirmed across southern Lake Michigan on Saturday morning. Locations impacted included New Buffalo, MI, and Dunes Acres, IN. One spout moved onshore at the Indiana Dunes National Park. No damage was reported.
According to the US National Weather Service, the waterspouts formed due to a cool Canadian air mass colliding with the lake’s warm waters. This weather pattern, combined with lake effect showers, helped produce the funnels, which were spotted as early as 3 a.m. EDT.
As temperatures cool this week, additional lake effect showers are possible across Lake Michigan. Meteorologists forecast scattered thunderstorms on Monday, potentially bringing gusty winds. The week’s weather may remain unstable due to continued cool air moving over warm lake surfaces.
