San Francisco, CA – Drivers and boaters across parts of the San Francisco Bay Area are being urged to use caution early this morning as dense fog continues to reduce visibility to dangerous levels.
According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey, a Dense Fog Advisory has been extended through 7 a.m. Thursday for the Northern Monterey Bay region and the East Bay Interior Valleys. Visibility in these areas has dropped to one-quarter mile or less, creating hazardous travel conditions.
Forecasters clarified that the Dense Fog Advisory has been allowed to expire for the southern Monterey Bay region, but fog remains thick farther north and inland. The advisory includes areas near San Francisco, Oakland, Concord, Fremont, Livermore, and portions of the East Bay valleys, as well as parts of northern Monterey Bay.
Low visibility may make morning driving especially dangerous, particularly on highways, bridges, and surface streets where fog can quickly thicken without warning. Officials advise drivers to slow down, use headlights, and leave plenty of distance between vehicles.
Marine interests are also affected. The National Weather Service warns that navigation may be difficult within Monterey Bay, and boaters should ensure proper lighting is on and operational to avoid collisions in reduced visibility.
Fog conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise as temperatures warm and visibility increases. However, officials stress that conditions can vary significantly over short distances.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and traffic conditions before heading out this morning.
