San Diego, California – Powerful wind gusts up to 70 mph are blasting the San Diego County mountains early Friday, creating blowing snow, icy roads and dangerous travel through 9 a.m. PST.
According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the mountain communities of Julian and Pine Valley. While snow showers are tapering, strong winds continue to produce areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility along higher elevations.
Travel along Interstate 8 will be hazardous.
Drivers crossing mountain passes on I-8 near Pine Valley and along State Route 78 near Julian can expect icy pavement and sudden crosswinds strong enough to push vehicles within lanes. Downed tree branches are possible where gusts peak, adding to travel impacts during the morning commute.
What residents should do now: Delay mountain travel if possible and check Caltrans QuickMap or call 511 for updated road conditions before departing.
Winds gradually weaken after midmorning, but icy patches may linger in shaded areas through late morning. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. PST Friday.
