SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A bright and mild Columbus Day will give way to a wetter, cooler stretch as fall showers return to northern Utah by Tuesday. The change will bring slippery roads and slower morning commutes along I-15 and I-80 through the Salt Lake Valley.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a weak front sliding into northern Utah will spark scattered showers Tuesday afternoon and evening. Rain chances rise to 60% by Tuesday night as moisture deepens across the Wasatch Front. Highs Tuesday will reach near 70 before dropping into the upper 40s overnight.

Drivers heading back to work or school after the holiday should allow extra time on the roads. Light rain could lead to minor ponding and reduced visibility during peak travel hours. UDOT urges motorists to check road conditions and reduce speed in wet areas.

The fall pattern continues midweek, with lingering showers and cooler highs near the mid-50s Wednesday. Drier weather returns Thursday, though morning air will feel crisp with lows in the low 40s. Sunshine dominates late week, setting up a pleasant stretch for pumpkin patch visits and fall leaf viewing into next weekend.

Residents should secure outdoor decorations and check gutters ahead of the next round of rain. Even light showers can dislodge leaves and clog drains, raising the risk of street flooding in lower areas of Salt Lake City.
