SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The first week of fall feels more like summer as Sacramento wakes to temperatures already climbing toward 98 degrees Tuesday. Dangerous heat will push across the region, keeping conditions sweltering until a cooler shift develops by Thursday. Drivers on I-5 and Highway 99 should prepare for high pavement temperatures that can impact vehicles and increase breakdown risks.

According to the National Weather Service, Sacramento will see highs near 98 Tuesday before dipping into the mid-80s Wednesday and settling near 87 Thursday. Winds will stay light, shifting from northwest to southwest midweek, offering little relief. Officials advise limiting outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, carrying extra water for commutes, and checking on vulnerable neighbors.

The heat’s impact will stretch beyond the city. Communities across Yolo, Placer, and El Dorado counties will see similar highs through Wednesday. Regional schools and businesses may consider heat safety plans, especially for outdoor activities. By late Thursday, partly cloudy skies will signal the arrival of cooler air and the return of more typical fall weather.

While no rain is expected through the week, forecasters note a slight chance of showers by Monday as moisture lifts into Northern California. This could mark the first sign of early-season fall precipitation.

Warnings for excessive heat remain in effect through Wednesday evening. Relief is expected Thursday, but continued monitoring is recommended in case advisories extend.
