Sacramento, California – Isolated thunderstorms are expected across parts of interior Northern California from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, bringing the potential for lightning, brief heavy rain, small hail, and gusty winds.

According to the US National Weather Service in Sacramento, the greatest thunderstorm chances will occur during the afternoon and evening hours today and again on Wednesday. While storms are expected to remain isolated, any thunderstorm that develops could produce hazardous conditions over a short period of time.

Probability maps show the highest thunderstorm chances across portions of the Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin Valley, including areas near Interstate 5, Interstate 80, Highway 99, and connecting state routes. Cities such as Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, Roseville, and Yuba City may see brief impacts if storms pass overhead.

Forecasters warn that the primary hazards with these storms include cloud-to-ground lightning, small hail, brief heavy downpours, and gusty, erratic winds. Rainfall amounts are not expected to be widespread, but localized heavier rain could lead to ponding on roadways and reduced visibility during peak travel hours.

The National Weather Service emphasizes that lightning can strike well away from the main storm core. Residents and outdoor workers are advised to seek shelter indoors if thunder is heard. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” forecasters noted in their advisory.

Travelers should be alert for rapidly changing conditions, particularly during the late afternoon and early evening commute. Slick roads may develop quickly where storms occur, especially along major corridors such as I-5, I-80, CA-99, and CA-50.

This alert may be especially relevant for commuters, students, and young workers who spend time outdoors or travel during afternoon and evening hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service as storm chances continue through Wednesday.
