Childress, TX – Strong thunderstorms could rattle parts of the southeastern Texas Panhandle and northern Rolling Plains this evening, bringing the threat of large hail, damaging wind gusts and intense lightning to communities near Childress, Paducah and Memphis.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. for Childress, Hall, Cottle, Dickens and Motley counties. Storms developing through the evening could produce hail large enough to damage vehicles, wind gusts capable of knocking down tree limbs, and bursts of heavy rainfall that may briefly reduce visibility on area highways.

Cities including Childress, Memphis, Paducah, Matador and Dickens sit within the watch area. Drivers along U.S. Highway 287 and U.S. Highway 83 should stay alert for sudden downpours and strong crosswinds if storms intensify. Lightning will also pose a risk for outdoor activities across the Rolling Plains.

Residents should keep multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including NOAA Weather Radio and mobile alerts. Securing loose outdoor items and moving vehicles into garages can reduce damage if hail develops.

Storm activity could continue into the late evening before gradually weakening overnight. Additional warnings may be issued if stronger cells form across the region.
