Lubbock, Texas – A dangerous round of severe storms will barrel across the southern South Plains and Rolling Plains Thursday afternoon and evening, with threats including damaging winds up to 80 mph, hail as large as softballs, and isolated tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, the greatest risk for severe thunderstorms will occur between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m., with storms first forming along the Texas–New Mexico line and then pushing eastward through the I-27 corridor. Cities including Lubbock, Plainview, and Brownfield are under a Level 3 “Enhanced Risk” zone for severe weather.

High winds could knock down trees and power lines, while large hail may damage vehicles and roofs. Motorists should avoid travel during peak storm times, and residents are urged to secure outdoor items and stay alert to changing conditions.

The NWS advises keeping mobile alerts active and monitoring updates at weather.gov/lub. Tornadoes, while isolated, remain possible into the evening hours.

Storm warnings could expand or intensify later tonight as cells shift into central Texas.
