San Angelo, Texas – Baseball-size hail and 75 mph winds could slam parts of West Texas Thursday night as an intense cluster of thunderstorms pushes south out of the Permian Basin.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, an enhanced risk (Level 3 of 5) of severe storms is in effect from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m., with Sweetwater, Sterling City, and Mertzon seeing impacts as early as 7 p.m. Storms will likely hit San Angelo and Abilene between 9 and 10 p.m.

Strong winds and hail are the primary hazards, but forecasters say an isolated tornado risk exists, especially near Sweetwater and Roby. The storms are expected to develop west and northwest of the region before tracking southeast into the Concho Valley and Big Country.

Travel may become dangerous this evening with poor visibility and road debris possible. Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid non-essential travel, and stay weather-aware via NOAA Weather Radio or emergency alerts. Power outages are also possible due to high winds.

Storm activity should taper off by early Friday, but additional alerts may be issued if conditions escalate.
