Lexington, Virginia – Drivers along the Blue Ridge Parkway could encounter snow-covered pavement and wind gusts up to 50 mph before sunrise Monday, creating hazardous travel through 7 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a strengthening coastal storm will continue to spread light to moderate snow into Rockbridge and Amherst counties overnight. Valleys including Lexington, Buena Vista and Amherst are expected to see an inch or less of accumulation, while elevations along and near the Blue Ridge Parkway could pick up as much as 4 inches.
Temperatures will drop overnight, allowing snow to stick quickly on bridges and untreated secondary roads. Gusty winds may bring down small tree limbs, especially along ridge tops and exposed stretches of Route 60 and U.S. 501.
The greatest impacts are expected during the early Monday morning commute, particularly in higher terrain where snowfall rates briefly increase overnight.
Motorists should slow down, allow extra travel time and check 511 for updated road conditions. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Monday, and additional statements could be issued if conditions worsen before daybreak.
