Buffalo, NY – The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Wayne and Northern Cayuga counties, warning of heavy lake effect snow and strong winds expected from Thursday evening through Saturday morning.

Forecasters say 7 inches or more of snow are possible in the most persistent lake effect snowbands, with wind gusts up to 45 mph creating areas of blowing and drifting snow. The combination will likely make travel very difficult at times, especially for those driving during the Thanksgiving holiday period.

According to the National Weather Service, snowbands forming off Lake Ontario could produce periods of near-zero visibility, particularly along U.S. Route 104, the New York State Thruway (I-90), and Route 31. The heaviest snowfall is expected late Thursday night through Friday, before gradually tapering off by early Saturday.

In addition to poor visibility and slick roads, gusty winds may down tree branches and cause isolated power outages, especially in open areas near the shoreline. Officials are urging residents to monitor forecasts closely and to delay nonessential travel during the height of the storm.

Meteorologists caution that lake effect snow can vary sharply over short distances — one community may experience whiteout conditions while another nearby sees only flurries. Drivers should be prepared for rapid changes in weather and visibility.

Residents are advised to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including blankets, food, water, and a flashlight, and to check 511ny.org for real-time road and travel updates.
