Rochester, New York – Bitterly cold conditions are expected to intensify in Rochester tonight, as a Cold Weather Advisory takes effect with dangerously low wind chills.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the advisory begins at 10 p.m. Monday and remains in effect until 1 p.m. Tuesday. Overnight wind chills in the Rochester area are expected to fall as low as 24 degrees below zero, creating a heightened risk of frostbite.

Forecasters warned that frostbite can occur in 30 minutes or less on exposed skin under these conditions. Residents are urged to bundle up in layers, limit time outdoors, and ensure adequate protection from the wind.

The coldest apparent temperatures are expected overnight through early Tuesday morning, particularly before sunrise. While air temperatures will remain below freezing into Tuesday afternoon, wind chills are expected to gradually improve as winds ease.

The advisory is part of a broader cold air mass impacting western and southwestern New York, with the most severe wind chills concentrated overnight. Officials emphasized taking precautions for people, pets, plants, and exposed pipes during the cold snap.

The timing of the cold poses added concern for overnight workers and early-morning commuters, when wind chills will be at their lowest and conditions most dangerous.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local officials as the cold weather advisory remains in effect.
