Richmond, Virginia – Heavy rain swept into Richmond Monday evening, triggering a Flash Flood Watch and raising the risk of rapid street flooding, hazardous driving, and local road closures through midnight.

According to the City of Richmond and the National Weather Service, highly localized downpours could drop 2 to 4 inches of rain in just 1 to 2 hours. While most areas will receive less than an inch, low-lying neighborhoods and streets near creeks face a higher threat of flooding. Officials warn that some roads may close if creeks or streams overflow.

Drivers are urged not to enter flooded roadways—”Turn Around, Don’t Drown” remains the rule. Residents should stay indoors, secure outdoor items, and keep devices charged in case of power outages. Emergency teams advise checking on elderly or vulnerable neighbors as conditions deteriorate.

City crews are monitoring trouble spots, and Richmond Ready Alerts remain active for the latest updates. This is the most significant flash flood threat in Richmond this July, echoing past events that closed roads and stranded vehicles.

Warnings will remain in effect until midnight, with additional updates possible if rainfall intensifies.
