Richmond, Virginia — A brief chance of very light snow may affect parts of eastern Virginia early on New Year’s Eve, but no accumulation is expected as dry, seasonable weather settles in for tonight and New Year’s Day.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, spotty light snow or flurries are possible early this morning across the northeastern half of the region, including areas near Fredericksburg, the Northern Neck, and portions of the Middle Peninsula. Any snow is expected to be short-lived, with little to no accumulation before skies clear.

Daytime highs Wednesday will range from the upper 30s to mid-40s, including Richmond (mid-40s), Williamsburg (mid-40s), and Norfolk (low- to mid-40s). Tonight, temperatures fall into the upper 20s to low 30s, making for a cold but quiet New Year’s Eve night.

Roadways that could briefly see early slick spots include I-95 north of Richmond, I-64 east toward Williamsburg and Hampton Roads, US-17, US-301, and Route 360, mainly during the pre-dawn hours. Widespread travel impacts are not expected, and roads should improve quickly after sunrise.

For New Year’s Day (Thursday), dry conditions continue with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 40s, supporting favorable travel across I-95, I-64, I-295, and Route 58. No weather advisories are in effect for tonight or Thursday.

The National Weather Service advises early-morning drivers to remain alert for isolated slick spots, but overall conditions are expected to be quiet and cooperative as the region rings in the New Year.
