Providence, RI – Rhode Island is set to begin December on a noticeably colder note as an Arctic Blast pushes into southern New England from Monday, Dec. 1 through Friday, Dec. 5. The shift will bring a Cold December pattern featuring falling temperatures, brisk winds, and periodic light snow chances.
According to the National Weather Service, early-week disturbances will bring a chance of rain and snow showers, especially Monday night and Tuesday as colder air deepens across the region. While snowfall totals are expected to remain low, brief bursts of snow or flurries could develop, particularly during the overnight and early-morning hours.
Temperatures are expected to drop into the low 20s statewide, with interior Rhode Island possibly slipping into the upper teens at times. Combined with gusty winds, the colder air will reinforce a winterlike feel that aligns with NOAA’s 6–10 Day Temperature Outlook showing below-normal temperatures across the region.
Forecasters emphasize that while no major storm is in the forecast, the arrival of Arctic air will keep precipitation primarily in the form of light snow or rain/snow mixes, depending on the time of day and location. Commuters should remain alert for isolated slick spots where temperatures fall below freezing.
The colder pattern is expected to persist through the week, with additional periods of clouds, passing flurries, and brisk winds reinforcing an early start to winter across Rhode Island.
