Reno, NV – In an unprecedented weather event, Reno, Nevada, recorded the coldest high temperature in its history for the month of August. The Reno-Tahoe Airport reported a high of just 57 degrees on Saturday, marking the lowest high temperature ever recorded in August. This surpasses the previous record of 58 degrees, set in both 1920 and 1907.

The National Weather Service in Reno noted that a potent upper-level trough brought unseasonably cold air into the region. This system caused temperatures to plummet up to 30 degrees below the seasonal norm, affecting much of Nevada.

According to the National Weather Service, the cold wave also impacted other Nevada cities. Elko, Eureka, and Winnemucca each set new records for the coldest high temperatures. In Elko, the high reached only 68 degrees, tying a record set in 1960. Meanwhile, Eureka’s 70-degree high shattered the previous record of 73 degrees, set in 1992.

This unusual cold snap is a strong indicator of an early transition to fall weather. Residents are advised to prepare for continued cooler-than-average temperatures in the coming days.
