Hastings, NE – A Red Flag Warning is in effect today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. across south central Nebraska and north central Kansas due to strong winds and low humidity, creating extreme fire danger. Residents are urged to take precautions to prevent wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), winds will blow at 25-30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph. Humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 20%, creating dangerous conditions for rapid fire spread. Affected areas include counties such as Adams, Buffalo, and Clay in Nebraska, and Phillips, Smith, and Jewell in Kansas.
Outdoor burning and activities that produce sparks, such as operating equipment or grilling, should be avoided. Fire officials stress that any fires that start today could spread quickly and become uncontrollable due to the combination of strong winds and dry air.
The NWS advises those in fire-prone areas to clear dry vegetation around their properties and to remain vigilant for emergency updates. Conditions will improve later in the evening as winds begin to decrease, but residents should remain cautious throughout the day to minimize fire risks.
