Sioux Falls, SD – A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today for eastern South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa, and northeast Nebraska. Strong winds and low humidity are expected to create extreme fire danger throughout the region.
The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that winds will blow between 20-30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph. Humidity levels will drop to as low as 20%, significantly increasing the risk of fast-spreading wildfires. Areas such as Minnehaha County in South Dakota, Lyon County in Iowa, and Nobles County in Minnesota are among those most affected.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged as any fires that ignite are likely to spread rapidly due to the combination of strong winds and dry conditions. Residents should avoid using machinery or any activities that could generate sparks, and property owners are encouraged to clear away dry vegetation.
The NWS advises residents to remain cautious throughout the day and to follow local emergency updates. Although winds are expected to subside in the evening, fire danger will remain high until the warning expires at 7 p.m. tonight.
