Goodland, KS – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for parts of northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska until 8 p.m. CDT Saturday due to critical fire weather conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning covers Decatur, Norton, Sheridan, Graham, Wallace, Logan, Gove, Greeley, and Wichita counties in Kansas, as well as Red Willow County in Nebraska. The warning, in effect from noon MDT (1 p.m. CDT) to 7 p.m. MDT (8 p.m. CDT), is due to a combination of strong winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures.
Winds from the north are expected to reach 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Relative humidity levels could drop as low as 14%, further increasing the risk of rapid fire spread. Temperatures in the affected areas are forecast to reach up to 55 degrees.
Officials warn that any fires that develop could spread quickly, making outdoor burning highly dangerous. Residents are urged to avoid activities that could ignite fires and to follow local fire restrictions.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring or are imminent. Residents should stay updated with the National Weather Service for further developments and safety precautions.
