El Paso, TX – Southern New Mexico faces a heightened wildfire threat Saturday as a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for the Sacramento and Capitan Mountains from noon to 8 p.m. MDT.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, strong westerly winds between 20 to 30 mph—with gusts up to 35 mph—are expected to coincide with extremely low humidity levels, creating critical fire weather conditions. Relative humidity could drop as low as 5% in lower elevations and between 8% to 12% above 7,500 feet.

The warning covers Fire Weather Zone 113, which includes Lincoln National Forest and surrounding high terrain. With fuel moisture at critical lows and ERC (Energy Release Component) values near the 95th percentile, the environment is primed for rapid fire spread. Temperatures are forecast to reach 74°F in valleys and 55°F to 60°F in higher elevations.

Residents and visitors are urged to avoid outdoor burning and any activity that could spark flames. Officials caution that even lower wind speeds can still support dangerous fire behavior due to dry fuels.

Preparedness actions include securing firewood piles, avoiding open flames, and monitoring local emergency updates.
