RALEIGH, N.C. – Torrential downpours are flooding roads and low-lying areas across parts of central North Carolina this evening, prompting urgent flash flood warnings in Wake, Franklin, Vance, and Warren counties. Drivers in Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and Apex should expect dangerous travel through at least 9 p.m. Monday as heavy rain overwhelms drainage systems.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, radar detected 1 to 2 inches of rainfall in west-central Wake County since late afternoon, with another 1 to 2 inches possible before storms move out. In northern Franklin County and portions of Vance and Warren counties, rainfall totals have reached up to 2.5 inches, with additional heavy rain likely through 8:45 p.m.
Flood-prone spots such as William B. Umstead State Park, Lake Wheeler, and stretches near Jordan Lake are already under stress. Law enforcement reports multiple flooded intersections and underpasses, and residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel. “Turn around, don’t drown” warnings remain in effect, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
The heaviest rain should taper off later tonight, but standing water could linger overnight. More advisories may be issued if storms redevelop Tuesday.
