Davenport, Iowa – Dangerous heat is tightening its grip across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois today, with heat index values climbing as high as 115 degrees before a chance of strong overnight thunderstorms adds another weather concern.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect for much of eastern Iowa and west-central Illinois through Monday, while an Extreme Heat Watch remains posted area-wide for Monday. Heat index values are expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees, with isolated locations including Fairfield and Memphis, Missouri, approaching 115 degrees this afternoon. Overnight temperatures will remain in the upper 70s, providing little relief from the dangerous humidity.
The greatest statewide concern remains the life-threatening heat affecting communities including Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Burlington, Dubuque, Clinton, Muscatine, Macomb and Sterling. Residents should postpone strenuous outdoor activities until early morning or late evening, drink water frequently, seek air-conditioned spaces and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
A second hazard develops late tonight into Monday morning. According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorm chances remain relatively low through the day, generally 5 to 15 percent, but increase to 20 to 40 percent after midnight, especially across northwest Illinois. Any storms that form could become severe, with damaging wind gusts as the primary threat. Torrential rainfall may also create localized ponding on roads and brief travel disruptions.
Storm Prediction Center outlooks place areas along and north of the Interstate 80 corridor, including the Quad Cities region, under a Level 2 of 5 Slight Risk for severe weather. Confidence in storm coverage remains low, meaning many communities could stay dry while a few experience strong to severe storms.
The dangerous heat will continue through Monday before gradual relief arrives later in the week. Additional heat or severe weather alerts may be issued as conditions evolve.
