Pueblo, Colorado – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for parts of southern Colorado on Tuesday as strong winds and extremely dry conditions increase the risk of rapidly spreading wildfires, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday for Teller, Fremont, Pueblo, and Huerfano counties. Forecasters say wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour combined with relative humidity levels as low as 8 percent could create critical fire weather conditions.

Under a Red Flag Warning, any new fire start can spread quickly and become difficult to control, especially in grasslands and areas with dry fuels. Even small ignition sources can lead to dangerous situations during these conditions.

The National Weather Service is urging residents and visitors in the affected counties to take extra fire prevention precautions. Officials warn that power equipment can generate sparks, trailer chains dragging on pavement can ignite grass fires, and discarded cigarette butts remain a common cause of wildfire starts. Motorists are also advised not to park vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can ignite vegetation.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged during the warning period, and residents should use extreme caution with grilling, barbecuing, or any activity involving open flames. Fireworks should not be used.

Fire weather conditions such as these are especially dangerous due to the combination of low humidity, strong winds, and dry fuels, which allow fires to spread faster than normal and reduce the effectiveness of suppression efforts.

Residents across Teller, Fremont, Pueblo, and Huerfano counties are encouraged to stay informed, follow local fire restrictions, and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
