Pueblo, Colorado – Southern Colorado will experience a dramatic weather shift from warm and dry conditions to winterlike weather by Sunday, as a strong cold front moves through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the plains will remain very warm and dry today and Saturday, with Friday highs between 61 and 72 degrees and Saturday highs ranging from 57 to 71 degrees under partly cloudy skies. Overnight lows will stay mild, generally in the 30s and 40s.
Conditions begin to change late Saturday as colder air approaches. Across the mountains, snow is expected to return late tonight and continue through the weekend. On Saturday, mountain areas will see a 70 percent chance of snow, with patchy blowing and drifting snow developing as winds increase. Mountain temperatures will range from 25 to 50 degrees Saturday, depending on elevation.
By Sunday, the cold front will bring a sharp drop in temperatures across the entire region. Plains highs are forecast to fall to 29 to 38 degrees, while mountain highs drop to between 14 and 31 degrees. Snow showers are likely in the mountains Sunday, with continued blowing and drifting snow reducing visibility at times.
In the mountain valleys, Sunday will bring a 50 percent chance of snow showers, with highs ranging from 29 to 36 degrees. Gusty winds behind the front may create difficult travel conditions, particularly in higher elevations and exposed areas.
The National Weather Service notes that the contrast between the warm start to the weekend and the cold, snowy conditions Sunday may catch travelers off guard. Residents and those with mountain travel plans are urged to monitor forecasts closely and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
