Duluth, MN – A powerful pre-Thanksgiving winter storm is forecast to bring heavy snow, high winds, and bitter cold to northeastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin beginning late Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.
Forecasters say precipitation will begin as rain before rapidly changing to snow Tuesday evening, with snowfall rates reaching 1 to 3 inches per hour overnight into Wednesday morning. The heaviest snow bands are expected over northeast Minnesota, including Duluth, Two Harbors, and the Iron Range, as well as parts of northwest Wisconsin.
By Wednesday morning, total snowfall could range from 6 to 12 inches, with some localized areas exceeding a foot. The NWS warns that whiteout conditions and rapidly deteriorating travel will make driving hazardous during the storm’s peak.
Behind the system, much colder air will settle across the region. Highs in the 20s and overnight lows in the single digits are expected through the weekend, with wind chills near zero.
Residents are urged to complete travel and errands before Tuesday night and prepare for dangerous winter driving and potential power disruptions.
