Amarillo, Texas – Drivers and outdoor workers across the Texas Panhandle will face near-record heat by mid-afternoon Sunday, with temperatures climbing to 90–94°F and peaking during peak travel hours along I-40.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, widespread highs will reach 90°F or higher by 3 p.m. Sunday, with Borger expected near 93°F, Beaver at 94°F, and Amarillo holding around 90°F. These numbers challenge long-standing records, including 87°F in Amarillo and 85°F in Dalhart.
The heat will stretch across the region, from Guymon at 92°F to Canadian near 92°F and Pampa around 90°F. Palo Duro Canyon is expected to reach 93°F, increasing dehydration risk for hikers and tourists by early afternoon. Communities along U.S. 287 and I-40, including Vega, Groom, and Shamrock, will see pavement temperatures climb rapidly, raising the risk of tire blowouts and vehicle overheating.
Emergency managers urge residents to limit outdoor activity between noon and 5 p.m., hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Fire danger may also increase as dry air combines with above-normal heat.
The heat surge holds through Sunday evening, with additional updates possible if records begin to fall across the Panhandle.
