Dodge City, Kansas – A fast-moving wildfire could ignite and spread within minutes across southwest Kansas today as hot, dry, and windy conditions take hold, putting communities and open areas at immediate risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect through this evening, signaling critical fire weather conditions across much of the region. Dry vegetation combined with gusty winds creates an environment where even a small spark can quickly grow out of control.

Across Ford, Finney, and surrounding counties, fire officials warn that roadside sparks, dragging trailer chains, and unattended burns pose a serious threat today. Grasses and brush are especially vulnerable, and flames could spread rapidly along rural roadways like U.S. 50 and U.S. 283. Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning and delay activities that could produce sparks.

Simple precautions can significantly reduce risk. Keep vehicles well-maintained to prevent sparks, avoid parking on dry grass, and never discard cigarettes outdoors. If using grills or smokers, place them on gravel or pavement and keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby. Campfires should be avoided entirely under these conditions.

Lawn care can also increase danger. Experts recommend mowing early in the day and avoiding it altogether if winds increase or humidity drops further. Always follow local burn bans and regulations.

Fire danger will remain elevated through tonight, and additional warnings could be issued if conditions persist into the week.
