Portland, ME – Strong winds and bitter cold are sweeping across Maine today, with gusts up to 45 mph and wind chills dipping well below zero, according to the National Weather Service in Gray.
Forecasters say blustery conditions will continue through tonight, especially in higher elevations and exposed coastal areas. Most of the state will see wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph, with Berlin and coastal zones potentially reaching up to 45 mph before easing early Friday.
Temperatures will struggle to rise above the teens, and apparent temperatures (wind chills) are expected to plunge as low as -14°F in Rangeley, -11°F in Berlin, and around -5°F in Rumford and Auburn overnight. The NWS warns that exposed skin can freeze within minutes under these conditions.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and bring pets indoors. Drivers should also use caution, as crosswinds may affect high-profile vehicles and cause reduced visibility in open areas.
