Portland, OR — Portland residents can expect hazy skies throughout the weekend as wildfire smoke blankets the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Portland has issued a statement indicating that smoke from ongoing wildfires will continue to affect air quality across the area through at least Saturday night, with some improvement expected by Sunday.

According to the NWS, the smoke is largely due to upper-level winds carrying smoke from multiple wildfires burning across the Pacific Northwest. While the densest smoke will remain aloft, some areas may experience reduced visibility and potential health impacts from smoke settling near the ground, depending on proximity to the fires.

As of Friday, the forecast predicts that conditions will improve significantly by Sunday night into Monday, aided by increasing onshore winds. Until then, residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

Despite the smoky skies, temperatures are expected to remain warm, with highs reaching the upper 80s on Saturday and cooling slightly to the low 80s by Sunday.
