Valparaiso, Indiana – Lake effect snow bands could rapidly drop 2 to 4 inches across eastern Porter County tonight, creating slick roads and sharply reduced visibility before the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the most persistent snow showers are expected east of State Road 49 and north of U.S. Route 30, where localized totals may exceed 4 inches. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon Monday.

Winds gusting 35 to 40 mph near the Lake Michigan shoreline will blow snow across open roadways, especially along Interstate 94 and U.S. 20. Some drifting is possible overnight into Monday morning, and conditions may vary dramatically over short distances as narrow lake effect bands shift.

Bridges and overpasses will become slick first as temperatures remain below freezing. The worst travel conditions are expected this evening through midmorning Monday.

Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and prepare for sudden whiteouts within heavier bands. Check 511in.org for real-time road conditions before heading out. The advisory continues until noon Monday, and additional updates are possible if bands linger longer than expected.
