Portage, Michigan – Drivers near US-131 and Shaver Road could encounter sudden drops in visibility within minutes today as smoke from a 62-acre prescribed burn spreads across the Gourdneck State Game Area.
According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Portage Department of Public Safety, fire crews are actively conducting the controlled burn on a swamp island within the game area. The operation is designed to improve habitat and reduce wildfire risk, but smoke and haze may drift into nearby neighborhoods and roadways throughout the day.
Areas around Portage, including neighborhoods near Osterhout Avenue and Shaver Road, may notice the smell of smoke and see active fire crews in the field. Brief visibility reductions are possible, especially during shifting wind conditions this afternoon.
Officials stress this is a planned burn and should not be reported as an emergency. However, drivers are urged to slow down near affected roads, and residents with respiratory concerns should limit time outdoors.
The burn is expected to continue through the daytime hours, with conditions improving by evening. Additional updates will be issued if smoke impacts increase or plans change.
