Des Moines, Iowa – Powerful wind gusts could make driving hazardous across Iowa by late morning, with peak speeds strong enough to down tree limbs and create sudden crosswinds on major highways through early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, southwest winds will ramp up quickly after 7 a.m., with widespread gusts reaching 40 to 45 mph across central and northern Iowa. The strongest winds are expected between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., prompting a Wind Advisory for portions of north central, northeast, and central Iowa.

Cities including Ames, Fort Dodge, Mason City, and Waterloo are in the core of the strongest wind zone. Travel along I-35 and I-80 may become difficult for semis and high-profile vehicles, especially on east-west routes where crosswinds will be most intense.

The combination of strong winds and low relative humidity is also elevating fire danger statewide. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and any activity that could spark flames.

By late afternoon into the evening, scattered showers and isolated storms will develop, bringing brief rain and shifting wind patterns. Conditions begin to settle after 7 p.m., but additional advisories remain possible.
