PEORIA, Ill. – A Red Flag Warning is in effect today for portions of north-central and west-central Illinois as dangerous fire weather conditions develop across the region.
The National Weather Service in Lincoln reports that west to southwest winds will gust up to 35 mph between 10 AM and 8 PM Wednesday. At the same time, relative humidity levels are expected to drop between 15 and 20 percent amid unseasonably warm temperatures. This combination of strong winds, dry air, and dry fuels will create an environment where any fire that starts can spread rapidly.
Communities including Peoria, Galesburg, Macomb, Bloomington, Pontiac, and surrounding areas near I-74, I-55, and US-34 are under the warning. Open agricultural fields, grassy areas, and roadside ditches are especially vulnerable due to dry vegetation and dormant winter fuels.
Officials stress that even small sparks from equipment, discarded cigarettes, or vehicle-related incidents can ignite fast-moving grassfires under these conditions. Fires may quickly grow out of control, particularly in open areas where winds can push flames rapidly across fields and toward structures.
Residents are urged to avoid all outdoor burning today. This includes burning brush piles, trash, or conducting controlled burns. Farmers and contractors should use extreme caution with machinery that could generate sparks. Drivers along I-74 and I-55 should be alert for possible smoke reducing visibility if fires develop near roadways.
Winds are expected to gradually ease after sunset, and humidity levels will begin to recover this evening. Until then, fire officials emphasize that prevention is critical. Avoiding risky activities today could prevent dangerous and costly wildfires across central Illinois.
