Springfield, IL – A Springfield man was injured in an officer-involved shooting after firing at police on Monday. The incident occurred in the 1600 block of S. 16th Street, where officers responded to a report of gunfire.

According to the Springfield Police Department, the suspect fired several rounds from a vehicle, striking an occupied residence. Officers later identified the vehicle and located the suspect that night. When officers attempted an arrest, the suspect allegedly resisted and opened fire, prompting police to return fire and injure the suspect. He is now in stable condition.

The Illinois State Police are investigating, and the officers involved are on administrative leave, per department policy. Authorities have asked the public for any information regarding the shooting.

Mayor Misty Buscher assured the public of full transparency in the ongoing investigation. Body camera footage will be provided to ensure accountability. “We are working with local stakeholders and the Illinois State Police to ensure a thorough, independent investigation,” Buscher said.
