Pennsylvania — Wet pavement across Pittsburgh won’t stay wet for long. A sharp cold front moves through late today, forcing temperatures down quickly and flipping rain to snow just as evening travel ramps up.

Rain develops through the afternoon with temperatures still mild. Conditions change rapidly after sunset as colder air pours in. Rain transitions to snow this evening, raising concerns for slick roads and flash freezing, especially where water remains on untreated surfaces.

Snow accumulations around Pittsburgh are expected to be light to moderate, generally 1 to 2 inches, but impacts may outweigh totals. The National Weather Service warns that even a dusting can create hazardous conditions when temperatures fall quickly. Heavier snow is more likely north of I-80 and along higher ridges, where 2 to 4 inches are possible.

Temperatures drop sharply behind the front, falling into the 20s overnight. Winds increase as colder air settles in, further worsening travel conditions. Gusts will be strongest in the ridges, but blustery conditions are expected across the metro area as well.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. this evening through Thursday evening for ridges and higher elevations near Pittsburgh. While the city itself may see lower totals, localized snow bands could briefly reduce visibility and coat roadways.

Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Roads that look merely wet could turn icy in minutes. Slowing down, increasing following distance, and allowing extra time will be key during the evening and early Thursday commute.

Snow tapers Thursday, but cold air remains locked in place. Any untreated surfaces may stay icy through the morning hours.

Looking ahead, winter holds firm into late week. Cold temperatures persist, keeping snow cover intact where it develops.
