Pittsburgh, PA – Western Pennsylvania residents could have a rare chance to see the northern lights tonight, thanks to another strong geomagnetic storm forecast by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.

According to the US National Weather Service Pittsburgh, skies will clear overnight Wednesday into early Thursday, creating a brief viewing window for the aurora before cloud cover and rain chances return later in the week. The geomagnetic activity, rated G3 to G4, is strong enough that auroras may be visible as far south as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, particularly in rural areas with darker skies.

After this evening’s light show potential, high pressure is expected to bring dry, mild weather Thursday and Friday, with temperatures rising into the upper 50s and low 60s. Rain chances increase again Saturday morning, marking the next significant change in the weather pattern.

The best chance to view the aurora will be between 9 p.m. and midnight Wednesday night, when skies are clearest and before high clouds move in from the west.
