Glenwood, AR – A Pike County Sheriff’s Deputy has been cleared of wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a woman on August 29, 2024. The shooting occurred after the deputy responded to reports of an armed individual near Highway 84 West in Glenwood.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office requested an investigation by the Arkansas State Police (ASP) Criminal Investigation Division (CID) following the incident. On Monday, September 23, 2024, Prosecutor Jana Bradford ruled the deputy’s use of lethal force was justified.

According to the ASP, the woman, identified as Jennifer Provence, 43, failed to comply with the deputy’s repeated orders to drop her weapon. Provence reportedly brandished a knife, leading the deputy to open fire. She died at the scene from her injuries.

The ASP CID submitted a full investigative report to the prosecuting attorney, who determined the actions were consistent with Arkansas law. No charges will be filed against the deputy.

This ruling comes after a thorough investigation into the events surrounding the incident. The sheriff’s office expressed condolences to Provence’s family but maintained that the deputy acted appropriately to protect public safety.
