Phoenix, AZ – Monsoon thunderstorm activity is expected to increase across south-central Arizona on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall, gusty winds, blowing dust and localized flash flooding to parts of the lower deserts.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, thunderstorms are expected to develop over eastern Arizona’s higher terrain Wednesday afternoon before moving into lower elevation communities later in the day. While not every location will receive rainfall, forecasters say slow-moving storms could produce locally heavy downpours capable of causing flash flooding.
The greatest threat is expected during the late afternoon and evening hours. Storms that repeatedly move over the same locations may increase the risk of flooding, particularly in normally dry washes, low-water crossings and other flood-prone areas.
The Weather Service has placed portions of Maricopa, Pinal and Gila counties under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 4) for excessive rainfall on Wednesday, with a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) covering parts of eastern Arizona. Forecast rainfall amounts generally range from up to one-half inch, though isolated areas could receive more than 1.25 inches beneath stronger storms.
In addition to heavy rain, residents should be prepared for frequent lightning, strong wind gusts and areas of blowing dust that could rapidly reduce visibility on area roadways.
Officials urge motorists to avoid driving through flooded roads or low-water crossings and to remain weather aware as conditions can change quickly during monsoon storms.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and any watches or warnings issued by the National Weather Service as storm development becomes more certain.
