Phoenix, Arizona – Anyone with outdoor plans across the Valley should keep a close eye on the sky this afternoon as thunderstorms developing over Arizona’s higher terrain could push into the lower deserts this evening. Even if storms weaken before reaching Phoenix, powerful outflow winds may kick up blowing dust, creating sudden travel hazards during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop over the higher terrain of eastern and northeastern Arizona this afternoon before shifting toward the lower deserts tonight. Storms have a 20% to 30% chance of reaching the Phoenix metropolitan area, while the probability of strong outflow boundaries impacting the Valley increases to 50% to 70%.
The greatest concerns include wind gusts exceeding 35 mph, areas of blowing dust reducing visibility to less than 3 miles, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and localized flooding where heavier downpours occur. Communities from Phoenix, Mesa and Tempe to Chandler, Gilbert, Surprise and Avondale could experience rapidly changing conditions if outflow winds move through ahead of the storms.
Drivers should be prepared for sudden drops in visibility on Interstates 10 and 17, Loop 101, Loop 202 and other major roadways if dust develops. If you encounter a dust storm, pull completely off the roadway, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake until visibility improves.
The highest threat is expected during the late afternoon and evening hours, with conditions gradually improving overnight.
