Phoenix, Arizona – Residents across the Phoenix metro area are urged to limit outdoor activity today as high ozone levels prompt an air quality alert for Maricopa County.

According to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), an Ozone High Pollution Advisory remains in effect through Friday evening. Weather conditions combined with existing emissions are expected to drive 8-hour ozone concentrations into levels that may cause health issues—particularly for children, older adults, and those with asthma or respiratory conditions.

Officials recommend minimizing strenuous outdoor activity and avoiding the use of gasoline-powered tools during the day. Commuters are encouraged to carpool, telecommute, or use public transportation to reduce emissions contributing to ozone formation.

The advisory covers the greater Phoenix area, including Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, and Glendale. Ozone pollution typically peaks in the late afternoon due to sunlight-driven chemical reactions, making evening activities more advisable.

While not uncommon in late spring, today’s pollution levels may approach unhealthy thresholds for sensitive groups. More air quality alerts could follow if weather patterns persist.
