Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Frigid mornings are settling in across the Philadelphia region as an Arctic air mass tightens its grip, creating dangerous cold and increasing travel concerns through midweek. The coldest conditions are expected late tonight into Tuesday morning, when wind chills plunge into the single digits and below zero across much of the area.
According to the National Weather Service office in Philadelphia/Mount Holly, breezy conditions tonight will combine with very cold air to drive wind chills as low as 15 degrees below zero in parts of eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect Tuesday morning for portions of the region, with the most severe cold occurring before sunrise.
In Philadelphia and surrounding counties, roads including I-95, I-76, I-476, the Schuylkill Expressway, and Roosevelt Boulevard are vulnerable to refreezing overnight. Bridges, overpasses, and elevated ramps are especially at risk for black ice as temperatures drop sharply under clear skies. Drivers heading out early Tuesday are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and watch for slick spots that may not be visible.
The bitter cold persists into Wednesday morning before a gradual moderation later in the week. Officials advise limiting time outdoors, dressing in layers, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Additional cold-related advisories may follow if the Arctic air lingers longer than expected.
