Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Drivers across the Philadelphia region could face slick roads early Thursday as a sharp cold front pushes winter back into the area, dropping temperatures fast enough to freeze untreated surfaces before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service office in Philadelphia/Mount Holly, rain developing this afternoon and evening will transition to snow overnight in parts of southeastern Pennsylvania, especially northwest of Interstate 95. Light snow accumulations are possible before precipitation ends early Thursday morning, with temperatures falling to near or just below freezing, creating a risk for icy travel.

Statewide, the cold front will usher in much colder air behind the departing system. Temperatures that start mild will slide quickly overnight, setting the stage for frozen bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads. In Philadelphia, surface temperatures may hover near freezing around daybreak, while communities north and west of the city, including Bucks, Montgomery, and Chester counties, face a higher chance of brief snow and ice.

Blustery conditions will add to the impact on Thursday. Westerly winds are expected to gust between 30 and 35 mph, making it feel colder and potentially affecting high-profile vehicles on east–west roadways such as I-76, I-276, and Route 422. By early Friday morning, temperatures across the region are expected to drop into the teens to near 20 degrees, with wind chills sinking into the single digits.

Motorists are urged to allow extra time for the Thursday morning commute, slow down on untreated roads, and be alert for rapidly changing conditions. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and prepare for sharply colder weather lasting into the end of the week. Additional advisories may be issued as the cold settles in and conditions are reassessed overnight.
