Jackson, Mississippi – A rare winter weather setup is expected to create slippery and potentially dangerous travel conditions across parts of central and eastern Mississippi late Saturday night through Sunday as colder air pushes south into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight tonight through 6 p.m. Sunday for Noxubee, Neshoba, Scott, Simpson, Smith, and Lincoln counties. The system is expected to produce a mix of light snow and freezing rain, with snow accumulations up to one inch and ice buildup around one-tenth of an inch.

The greatest concerns will be untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses, especially during the early morning hours Sunday. Cities including Philadelphia, Macon, Brookhaven, Forest, Magee, Taylorsville, and Mendenhall could see slick driving conditions develop quickly as precipitation freezes on contact with cold surfaces. Even small amounts of ice may lead to spin-outs and slow travel on secondary roads.

Emergency officials urge residents to limit travel if possible and check conditions by calling 511 before heading out. Those who must travel should slow down and allow extra stopping distance. Pedestrians should also use caution, as sidewalks, stairs, and driveways may become icy.

Wintry precipitation is expected to taper Sunday evening, though lingering slick spots may persist after sunset. Additional advisories remain possible if ice amounts increase or conditions worsen.
