South Bend, Indiana – A widespread winter system is set to bring accumulating snow and slippery travel conditions across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan beginning Saturday evening and lasting into early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect Saturday evening and continues through early Monday for much of northern Indiana and adjacent parts of southwest Michigan. Snow totals are expected to range from 3 to 6 inches across inland areas, with 2 to 5 inches closer to Lake Michigan. The highest accumulations are likely south of a line from Hillsdale, Michigan, through Warsaw and Winamac, Indiana.
Snow is expected to overspread the region Saturday night, impacting roads across Elkhart, LaGrange, Steuben, Noble, Marshall, Fulton, Pulaski, White, and Starke counties. Travel along major routes including U.S. 30, U.S. 31, and portions of I-69 could become slick overnight. Around South Bend, Elkhart, and La Porte, snowfall may continue into Sunday before transitioning to lake-effect snow Sunday night.
In southwest Michigan, including Berrien, Cass, Branch, and Hillsdale counties, periods of heavier snow could reduce visibility and quickly coat roadways. Additional lake-effect snow may add another 1 to 2 inches late Sunday night into early Monday, especially near Lake Michigan.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check conditions by calling 511 before traveling. Advisories may be extended if lake-effect snow intensifies into Monday.
